What is personal brand photography and why do you need it?
One of the most effective ways for any solo entrepreneur or business owner looking to build an audience and sell more is through personal branding photography. Let’s talk about what personal branding photography is, why it’s important, and how working with a professional like me — Kristin Madeja — can help take your brand to new heights.
When it comes to building your personal brand, the cliché is you only get one chance at a first impression. But as business owners, we know it takes multiple touchpoints to connect with your audience and move them to action.
That’s where personal branding photography comes in. It’s not just a headshot, it’s an opportunity to showcase your personality, style, and brand. With the right photographer and a clear message, personal branding photography can take your brand to new heights and set you apart from the competition.
So what is personal branding photography?
Personal branding photography focuses on capturing the personality, style and business of the individual or business owner. It’s different from traditional headshots, as it seeks to tell a story that captures the essence of your brand rather than just a simple image of the person. Your brand might include being a mom or dad, being an expert in your industry, selling products, coaching people, writing and speaking. It’s not just one of these things — it’s all these things!
Personal branding photography can help you build trust and authenticity with your audience by showcasing who you are and what you stand for. By capturing your unique brand personality, you’ll build a deeper connection with your audience and increase the likelihood of them doing business with you.
Personal branding photography is different from other types of photography in that it’s specifically focused on building a collection of images that communicate your entire brand, including your products and services. It’s not just about taking a pretty picture; it’s about capturing your brand personality in the best light possible. Whereas other types of photography might be more focused on aesthetics in a single image, personal branding photography focuses on multiple telling a story with intentionality.
How personal branding photography can elevate your brand
Build trust and authenticity
One of the main benefits of personal branding photography is that it helps build trust and authenticity with your audience. By showcasing your entire life personality and style, you’re able to differentiate yourself and create a deeper level of trust with your audience. Since people are more likely to do business with someone they feel connected to, personal branding photography is an effective way to establish that connection. So if you’re a mom who sells to other moms, you need images of you with your kids enjoying life. It’s about capturing you in everyday settings, such as your home or office, and helps convey your personality and values in a more natural and relatable way.
Consistency across all marketing platforms
Another benefit of personal branding photography is that it helps create consistency across all marketing platforms. When your imagery is consistent across your website, social media, email marketing, and other channels, it helps build brand recognition and makes you more memorable. With the right imagery, you can create a cohesive and professional image for your brand that stands out.
Show off your personality, style and expertise
Finally, personal branding photography is a great way to showcase your personality and style. It allows you to create a unique visual narrative that tells your story and sells the transformation your services and products offer. By capturing your brand personality in the right light, you’ll not only build trust with your audience but also create a sense of individuality and authenticity. In my own social media, it’s the personal stories that gain way more interaction and comments. Having a lot of images to choose from makes telling your stories easier and faster.
Examples of how personal branding photography is used
Website imagery
One of the most common ways personal branding photography is used is on a business’s website. Your brand imagery will help establish your personality and create a sense of authenticity for your audience. By featuring personal branding photography prominently on your website, you’ll build trust with potential customers and capture their attention. such as a studio or location that reflects your work.
Social media profiles
Of course, personal branding photography is used on social media. By using personal branding photography on social media, you’ll create a cohesive and professional image for your brand that resonates with your audience. You can use your personal brand photos exclusively or you can mix in your selfies and everyday photos too. What I love about personal brand photography, is having enough photos to post regularly, whether it’s daily or weekly.
Brochures
You can use your photos in print materials such as business cards and brochures to convey a polished, professional image. You can also use them in print advertisements and other promotional materials.
Email newsletters
Finally, personal branding photography can be used in email newsletters to showcase your brand personality and build trust with your audience. How you use personal branding photography in your newsletters will depend on your niche and your brand goals, but some ideas might include featuring personal stories, showcasing your workspace, or highlighting products or services.
How to choose a personal branding photographer
Factors to consider
First and foremost, look for a photographer who has experience shooting personal branding photography and who has a portfolio that aligns with your brand. Personal brand photographers understand that you need a lot of images horizontal so they work on your website. You need images that have extra space so you can put words overtop the picture that are legible.
Questions to ask
Before hiring a personal branding photographer, be sure to ask plenty of questions. Ask about their process, what to expect during a shoot, and how long it will take to receive the final images. Ask about locations for the session. You may want images in your home or office. Or if that doesn’t represent your brand, consider a hotel room or AirBnB. You’ll also want to ask about pricing, licensing (how long you’re allowed to use the photos), and what’s included in their packages. You can view my packages here.
Working with Kristin
When you work with me as your personal brand photographer, we will always start with a plan. I like to base your plan around your BrandScript to ensure we are telling a consistent story across your messaging and visuals. I believe your photographs need to be planned out with the goal of building an audience and driving sales.
During a personal branding photography session with me, we’ll capture a series of images that showcase your brand personality. This might include headshots, lifestyle & environmental images, or product shots, depending on your brand and goals. Expect to spend anywhere from 1-4 hours on the shoot, depending on the complexity of your branding and the number of different shots you want to capture. Many women like to hire a makeup artist prior to the session and I can include that in your package if you choose.
I also encourage solo entrepreneurs to consider more than one session per year. As your business grows and changes, so should your imagery. Having multiple sessions keeps your look fresh and up-to-date. With multiple sessions, we can look at your analytics to see what’s working and what’s not. Every session needs to drive ROI, not just make you look pretty.
As a graphic designer and marketer, I understand the challenge you face when your photos don’t fit on your website or on social media. Vertical pictures don’t work in the header! I am very intentional to take photos that have space for words and stickers.
I want you to feel confident as we show you in motion, doing what you love, and engaging with your work. You’ll love having a collection of images you can use when you want, how you want and that help you achieve your goals and sell more.
